Trotting is a method of float fishing used on rivers where the float is allowed to travle downstream. The Idea is a certain points to stop the float so that nthe hook bait will rise up in the water so it looks as natural as possible.

 

The best reel for this approach is the centrepin but fixed spools can be used with the bale arm closed.
